Fall is here, and you know what that means: winter is right around the corner. Your home should be a warm, cozy retreat where you can escape from the lower temperatures. Don’t let the cold season sneak up on you without being ready for it! Make sure that your furnace is ready to go when you need it by following these four simple steps:
1. Conduct a practice run of your heating system. First, check your vents to make sure they are uncovered. Next, turn your thermostat to the “heat” setting and turn the temperature up a couple of degrees higher than the current room temperature. You should hear your furnace kick on and begin to work. Listen for any sounds that may signal you have a problem, such as clanking or knocking (call a professional if you hear something that sounds out of place).
2. Change the air filters on your HVAC system. You should be doing this frequently as a homeowner, and the change in seasons is the perfect time for it. When shopping for a new air filter, make sure you choose the right size and type by checking what filter you have right now. A clean filter will ensure that your furnace is more efficient at heating your home as it won’t be clogged by dust or hair particles.
3. Do a safety check. Make sure your carbon monoxide detector is working, clear the area around your furnace of any fire hazards, and check your chimney to make sure nothing is blocking the airflow. You might also consider having your ducts cleaned if it has been a while. This will help your system run more efficiently.
