If you own a business, your commercial HVAC system is important in keeping your employees and customers comfortable during all seasons of the year. The best way to keep your commercial HVAC system running efficiently is to perform regular maintenance, but there are some common signs that your unit needs immediate service.

Commercial HVAC: Common Signs That You Need Service

  • Short Cycling or Uneven Temperatures. When your HVAC system short cycles, or stops before reaching a target temperature, your employees will likely notice it right away because the temperature in their work zone will be different than it normally is. This could be an indicator that there is a faulty electronic component, dirty evaporator coils, or low refrigerant. Uneven temperatures throughout the workplace could mean there is a problem with the thermostat or ventilation dampers.
  • Unusual Noises. If you notice sounds that are not typical to your commercial HVAC system such as rattling, clanking, or squealing, it could indicate that a part is loose or there is an issue with the bearings or fan belts.
  • Increase in Energy Costs. If you see a sudden increase in your energy bill that does not correlate with the temperature outside, there may be a problem with your thermostat. Clogged filters, debris in the system or a refrigerant leak all cause strain on your system and may shorten the lifespan of your commercial HVAC system.
  • Unusual Smells. Burning smells, rotten egg odors, and musty smells can all be warning signs that there is a problem with your unit that needs to be evaluated immediately. Musty smells can indicate growth of mold and spores, especially in humid climates. A burning smell may be due to wires melting or short circuiting or an engine or compressor overheating. The smell of rotten eggs may indicate a gas leak.
